Abstract

With the new Seed Law, the Free Trade Agreement, the high price ofhybrid seed and the large area with potential use of improved corn seed, the competence and participation of small seed companies has increased. The Department of Agricultural Engineering of the Universidad Autónoma de México (UNAM) is conducting plant breeding and research on seed technology and production since 1984. Some materials and populations from the Centro Internacional de Mejoramiento de Maíz y Trigo (CIMMYT), and lines from advanced generations of hybrids and local materials released by the UNAM were taken as a source of germplasm. Before combining the materials, a selection for stunting, bud elimination, lodging and disease tolerance was emphasized. The evaluation results show that the hybrids PUMA 1079, PUMA 1073, PUMA 1001 and PUMA 1003 surpass the most widely used hybrid in the High Valleys. Besides, they showed lower plant and ear height than the H-33. The PUMA hybrids are trilineal while the H-33 is a doublecross. The PUMA corns can be used by Small Seed Companies to favor a wideruse of certified seeds.
