The admiral Christopher Columbus</p><p>landed on new continent, which later was named America.</p><p>When he discovered the Antilles, found that these islands</p><p>were inhabited by several tribes and the agriculture was the</p><p>center of their lives, uses and costumes, many of them were</p><p>inherited and still are in use. The present work, describes</p><p>some costumes and provides some examples of their</p><p>influence on names of crops such as peanut (Arachis hypogea</p><p>L.), corn (Zea mays L.) sowrsop (Annona muricata L.), sweet</p><p>pitaya (Hylocereus undatus B &amp; G) and tobacco (Nicotiana</p><p>tabacum L.), particular uses in the case of mamey (Mammea</p><p>americana L.), cocoplum (Chysobalanus icaco L.) and</p><p>cassava (Manihot esculenta C.), as food crops as cocoyam</p><p>(Xanthosoma saggittifolium Sh), sweet potato (Ipomoea</p><p>batatas L.) and topee tambo (Callathea allonia) or native</p><p>plants such as pineapple (Ananas comosus L.), nance</p><p>(Byrsonima crassifolia H.B.K.), guava (Psidium guajava L.),</p><p>coconut (Cocos nucífera L.), star apple (Chysophylum cainito</p><p>L.), guayacán (Guayacum sanctum L.) and mahogany</p><p>(Swietenia microphyla L.).</p> ER -
