Abstract

Coral reefs cover only about 3% of the ocean’s surface yet support approximately 33% of marine biodiversity. They also generate substantial economic benefits, with an estimated spillover value of $350,000 per hectare per year (Costanza et al., 2014). Despite their ecological and economic importance, nearly 90% of coral reefs are currently under threat, primarily due to anthropogenic pressures (Souter et al., 2020). This alarming situation has created an urgent need to implement effective policies for their protection and restoration, prompting global initiatives such as the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (UN, 2021).
