Abstract

To evaluate alveolar bone thickness on the buccal and lingual surfaces of mandibular first and second molars using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and to assess possible variations according to age and sex in a Peruvian population. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted using 112 CBCT scans obtained from a radiology center between 2022 and 2023. A total of 448 mandibular molars (224 first molars and 224 second molars) were analyzed. Alveolar bone thickness was measured at the mesial and distal roots on both buccal and lingual surfaces at coronal, middle, and apical levels. Descriptive statistics were calculated, and group comparisons were performed according to age and sex. Significant age-related differences were observed in several buccal and lingual measurements. Younger individuals presented greater buccal bone thickness at coronal and middle root levels, whereas older individuals exhibited greater lingual thickness at selected middle and apical sites. Sex-related differences were limited to specific coronal buccal measurements of the first molar and were of small magnitude. lveolar bone thickness in mandibular molars varies according to age and anatomical location. Age-related variations should be considered during surgical, orthodontic, and implant treatment planning in the posterior mandible.
