The socio-economic activity of the Programa Cooperativo Regional de Frijol-PROFRIJOL (Regional Cooperative Bean Program) for Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean started in September of 1984. The work done can be divided into three stages: Stage 1. Adoption studies which comprised the years from 1984 to 1987. Stage 2. From 1987 to 1989, the research and technology transfer of the crop was supported. Stage 3. The strengthening of the UDSE Units was a high priority during this stage, from 1989 to 1991. The socio-economic activity was considered important for the agricultural research programs, when the respective support was executed.
