Abstract
In this article the author makes a critical analysis of mathematics curriculum for middle school, in force in Brazil in the 1950s and suggests to guide the mathematics instruction in terms of three values: formative, informative and utilitarian. Some of the ideas suggested for the development of such a program are: connection between different areas of mathematics, problem solving and the use of the history of mathematics as a teaching resource. Finally the author mentions a few references to works with an orientation close to those given in the article.
