Arbitration system: Articles are subjected to an arbitration and evaluation process known as "double blind" that is exercised by scientific peers external to the journal, both national and international, and which is anonymous, both for referees and for authors. This is done to avoid any possible bias against or in favor of the manuscript and thus ensure the transparency of the process. Periodicity: This journal publishes each december with an annual periodicity.

Access and reuse policies: This journal uses a Creative Commons license, the user can read, download, store, print, search, index and create links to the full texts, as long as this is carried out without commercial purposes and the original source and the person cited charge of its authorship. (License: Creative Commons Attribution-Non-Commercial-No Derivatives 4.0 Costa Rica).

Plagiarism detection: When a manuscript is received, it is submitted to the Turnitin software, in case of receiving a porcentage greater than 50 the manuscript will be definitively rejected, and the person will not be able to submit manuscripts for one year. If it is less than 50%, the author will be informed that they can carry out the corresponding review and clearly identify the source from which the information has been taken, later it will be reviewed again through Turnitin to verify its correction. If the correction is not made, the author will be suspend for two years.

Elaboration of bibliographic references: Manuscripts must to present references in accordance with the APA Publications Manual (7th edition in English, 2020). All the references on the list must be cited in the text and vice versa. You can check here----> APA 7th edition guide

Digital preservation policies: Annals of Gerontology uses LOCKSS for digital preservation, it will also keep the manuscripts received and corrected, correspondence from both the journal and authors and reviewers, opinions, as well as any other material that relates to the manuscript from its reception to its publication or rejection, in digital format in the Postgraduate in Gerontology, classified by volume number and name of the manuscript. Two backup are made during the year in a USB memory.

Focus and scope

Annals in Gerontology is an official publication of the University of Costa Rica, sponsored by the Graduate Program in Gerontology of this same house of studies. Its objetive es disseminate scientific production in all fields of gerontological science. This is done by the annual publications of original articles and inedits that make known empirical research results, systematization of thesis experiences and professional practice reports, theoretical essays, reflections on policies, programs or projects with older adults or references to the aging process.

The journal is aimed at students and professionals in gerontology and related sciences, this journal is freely accessible, published in Spanish and English. It has a permanent call for manuscripts, authors can send their manuscript at any time of the year. Its publication is annual, the closing of the number takes place in December of each year.

There are no charges for submitting an article for review or for its processing, those interested in publishing should review the Guidelines for authors, prior to submitting it.

Peer review process

The articles presented in Annals in Gerontology (AG) are subjected to an arbitration and evaluation process known as "double blind" carried out by scientific peers outside the journal, both national and international, which is anonymous, both for referees and authors and authors, this is done to avoid any possible bias against or in favor of the manuscript and thus ensure the transparency of the process.

Manuscripts sent to the journal undergo a review through the Turnitin Software, after a preliminary review within the Editorial Team, where it is determined if the manuscript complies with the Guidelines for authors and authors.

Once this stage is passed, is send to a minimum of two professionals who specialize in the subject related to the manuscript are sent. The evaluators are unaware of its authorship, so that they can give an opinion on the manuscript based solely on its quality.

To carry out this evaluation, AG has the article evaluation instrument, which is sent back to the journal by the reviewers with the observations with a preliminary opinion.

These evaluations are valorated by the Editorial Team and a final opinion is made which can be:
(a) accept their publication, (b) publishable with significant modifications (c) pending publication until substantive changes are made and (d) reject.

At the end of each published issue of the journal, the list of reviewers for that issue is presented without identifying which article they evaluated.

Publication Frecuency

Annals in Gerontology (AG) publishes the articles in the current volume on December 1.

Regarding publication times, the average to receive the opinion based on the criteria of the referees is six months and the estimated term for the publication of the manuscripts is 12 months.

Free Acess Policy

AG ensures compliance with all national and international ethical standards in the publication process. For that, it uses Turnitin's plagiarism detection services. When the manuscript is received, it is submitted to the Turnitin software, in case of receiving a % greater than 50 the manuscript will be definitively rejected, in case of being less, the author will be informed to carry out the corresponding review and clearly identify the source from which the information has been taken.

Authors: They will present the results of rigorous, transparent and ethical research processes, assuming responsibility for the published research. They should describe their research methods in such a way that the scientific community can corroborate or replicate the data. They will refrain from sending the manuscript simultaneously to two or more journals. They will disclose the sources of funding and relevant conflicts of interest, when they exist, and will declare if there is a conflict of interest, they will also provide a written declaration of authenticity of the authorship and originality of the manuscript.

Reviewers: They undertake to report on possible fraud or plagiarism of the evaluated research. They will refrain from using the information present in the manuscripts they review until they are published by Annals in Gerontology. They will evaluate the articles rigorously, objectively and in the established time. They will substantiate their observations and make, when pertinent, contributions to improve the quality of the manuscript.

The authors who send their articles to be evaluated to AG assign the publication rights to the journal, for dissemination in digital format. The articles that are published will be visible and will also be downloaded from the websites that the journal is part of, in all cases, the authorship of the articles, the date of publication and the number of the journal to which they correspond. All documents published by AG can be downloaded from the website of the journal Annals in Gerontology and from the databases where it is indexed.

The documents that are published must be original, unpublished, innovative, with sufficient clarity and comply with the guidelines of the Journal, for this aspect the review processes are described in detail from the moment the manuscript is entered, peer review, philological review and publication, in addition authors are given the opportunity to appeal any editorial decision. The publication standards are periodically reviewed so that they are as clear as possible and new reviewers with experience in different topics are continually sought, taking into account the interdisciplinarity of Gerontology.

In the event of detecting any ethical misconduct during the review process or, even after publication, it is the responsibility of the journal to take the corresponding actions to sanction the breach of ethical principles.

The opinions expressed in the manuscripts are the sole responsibility of the authors and do not compromise the scientific opinion and policy of the journal.

Journal history

The Annals in Gerontology Journal began to be displayed since 1994, when the Postgraduate Program in Gerontology began, in 1997 the project and regulations for the journal were formulated, which was approved as a technical series by the Editorial of the University of Costa Rica in 1998. Its first publication was in 1999, its main objective was to bring together the production on aging of authors related to the Gerontology Program of the University of Costa Rica, this publication was made thanks to the academic effort of Professor M.Sc. Flory Stella Bonilla Gamboa +, Director of the Postgraduate Program in Gerontology and Director of the Editorial Committee 1994-2002, who visualized the studies that would be carried out in Costa Rica on aging and the elderly.

Six volumes were published in print, where a series of studies on aging and issues related to old age were brought together, with a diversity of opinions and interests that led to a dialogue on texts and problems of gerontological reality, with which it approached to the achievement of the ideals announced by the Gerontology Program and the creation of the Annals in Gerontology Journal, which offers an overview of the reasons that characterize the current genesis of this discipline in the country.

From 2002 to 2011, the M.Sc. Sui Moy Li Kam, who continued with the journal's project to introduce topics that contribute to the commitment to improve the quality of life of older adults, as well as studies on gerontological issues that can be accessible to readers of various disciplines.

As of 2015 volume 7, the Annals in Gerontology Journal is moved to the free access digital version, to promote a greater exchange of knowledge at a global level, for this reason, it also becomes a continuous publication, that is, it publishes the articles as soon as they are ready, adding them to the Table of Contents of the current issue. With this, our users can read, download, store, print, search, index and create links to the full texts, provided that this is carried out without commercial purposes and the original source and the person in charge of its authorship are cited.

From 2013 to 2019, she assumes the direction of the Journal the M.Sc. Mabell Granados Hernández, giving continuity to the interdisciplinary character at the national and international level, which are related to the theme of aging and old age, in order to enrich the practical experience and the scientific heritage of people interested in various gerontological issues.

In 2020, Dr. Flor Jiménez Segura assumes the direction of the Journal.

Annals in Gerontology aims to be an ideal means of dissemination to publicize the products of research in the various fields of knowledge about the elderly population, likewise, the pages of the journal are open to studies about the growth in relation to the elderly population , government policies, legislation, and in general all aspects related to old age and aging, and all those professionals who work in institutions related to the elderly and whose practical experience can enrich scientific knowledge and, at the same time, create bridges between these institutions and academy.

As Pérez indicates "this research project and dissemination of results, as expressed in different conversations Flory Stella is an open dream, a dream to continue dreaming, transforming mentalities, recommending strategies, showing experiences that serve to live better, to help live better for others ". (paragraph 5, Vol. 4, 2004)

Therefore, the Postgraduate in Gerontology and the Editorial Board wish our readers an enriching reading of each issue and urges them to also honor us with their collaborations.
