Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • It is unpublished, original and has not been submitted to any other journal.
  • The file sent is in Microsoft Word (*.doc, .docx), OpenOffice Writer (.odt) format.
  • The font is Times New Roman 12 point and 1.5 line spaced.
  • Do not exceed the maximum total number of pages, including tables, diagrams, bibliographical references and annexes.
  • The structure of the summary and abstract for manuscripts of empirical studies, thesis reviews and professional practice reports should follow a structure of the following type: objective, method, results and conclusions. In the case of theoretical essays and reflections, a structure of the following type should be indicated in the abstract: purpose-introduction, development and conclusions.
  • Attached are the 2 complementary files (attach them in step 4 of this submission) which include: 1. A file indicating the name and surname of the first author and other authors, if applicable, with their institutional affiliation and a "Curriculum Vitae" of three to five lines. The first author will be considered the main author and will be in charge of the link with Annals in Gerontology. 2. The second file is a declaration of authenticity of authorship and originality of the manuscript, specification that the manuscript has not been submitted in parallel to another journal and a statement of copyright (a); as well as the auspices under which the research was conducted and a clarification in case the results of the research have been previously presented in academic events.
  • Tables and figures follow the guidelines of the APA publication manual, indicating their source.
  • It presents references according to the APA Publication Manual and all references in the list are cited in the text and vice versa.

Author Guidelines

The papers submitted may be manuscripts resulting from empirical research, systematization of thesis experiences and professional practice reports, theoretical essays, reflections on policies, programs or projects with older adults or referring to the aging process.

 1. Those interested in publishing in Anals in Gerontology should send manuscripts to the Director of the journal through the OJS system or via e-mail: revista.gerontologia@ucr.ac.cr accompanied by a cover letter indicating the name and surname(s) of the first author and other authors, if applicable, with their institutional affiliation. The first author will be considered the main author and will be in charge of the link with Anals in Gerontology.

2. A written statement of authenticity of authorship and originality of the manuscript is required. It should indicate that the manuscript has not been sent in parallel to another journal and a statement of granting the author's rights on the manuscript to Anals in Gerontology. The same letter should indicate the auspices under which the research was carried out and a clarification in case the results of the research have been previously presented in academic events.

 3. All authors and co-authors should provide a three to five line "Curriculum Vitae", their institutional affiliation and contact information.

 4. Manuscripts are received in electronic format through the OJS management system or by e-mail, in a single block, titles and subtitles without bold, in Microsoft Word format (*.doc, *.docx), presented in 1.5 line spacing with Times New Roman font size 12.

 5. Empirical studies, thesis reviews and professional practice reports must have a maximum of 25 letter-size pages. Reflections on experiences and theoretical essays should have a maximum of 10 pages. Letter size is understood as 21.4 cm by 28 cm (8.5 in. x 11 in.)

 6. The use of italics should be avoided as much as possible, using only those required for expressions in languages other than Spanish or to highlight a word or expression. The journal does not encourage the use of footnotes. Tables and figures should be presented in the precise place in the text with their respective source. Authors may not make modifications to final proofs or galleys.

 7. On the first page of the manuscript, the complete title of the paper should be indicated in Spanish and English.

8. Should be submitted a summary and abstract no more than 50 words each one.

 9. The structure of the summary and abstract for manuscripts of empirical studies, thesis reviews and professional practice reports should follow a structure of the following type: objective, method, results and conclusions. In the case of theoretical essays and reflections, a structure of the following type should be indicated in the abstract: purpose-introduction, development and conclusions.

 10. All texts must include key words with the respective English translation "Key works", a maximum of three to five key words must be indicated, neither conjunctions nor articles must be indicated (it is recommended to use the UNESCO thesaurus).

 11. References in the text and the final list of references, the authors should follow the guidelines of the APA Publication Style Manual (2020), 7th edition in English. In addition, the style, grammar and spelling of the language in which they are written should be observed to the best of their ability. You can review the APA Standards Guide 7th edition

12. The Director of the journal may reject manuscripts that do not conform to the editorial line, publication guidelines or ethical standards of scientific work in gerontology. Decisions about the publication of a manuscript are autonomous and unappealable and are the sole responsibility of the Journal Anales en Gerontología, its Director, the Scientific Council and the Editorial Team.

13. The papers presented in Anales en Gerontología are submitted to a process of arbitration and evaluation by scientific peers external to the journal, both national and international, which is double-blind for all papers submitted, anonymous for both reviewers and authors.

 14. The result of the evaluation will be communicated in writing as soon as possible. The following decisions will be established: Approve publication, Publish if the recommendations are met, Do not publish.

 15. In the event that the article receives a positive and a negative opinion from the reviewers, the journal will submit it to a third reviewer, whose vote will define its final approval or rejection.

 16. When an article is approved for publication, the author will follow the corrections, suggestions and recommendations of the reviewers. If he/she disagrees with any point of the opinion, he/she may send a letter to the Editorial Board stating in detail the reason for the disagreement. The Editorial Board will have no more than 15 working days to respond. The author will deliver the approved original in digital version (via OJS in *doc or *docx format), within 15 working days after the opinion.

 17. Anales en Gerontología reserves the right to reproduce articles that are accepted for publication.

 18. The withdrawal of an article shall be requested in writing to the editor of the journal and may only be made after the respective written response.
