Abstract
Current professional practice has influenced education in engineering with certain attitudes towards theoretical knowledge, experience and numerical models that are evident in contemporary textbooks in the field. Focus on recently published material displaces valuable classic texts, and excess confidence on numerical models, technical databases and documentation distract the user from useful knowledge. Holistic attributes such as insight, technical intuition, and wide field perspective need to be strengthened with specific training pointers at all stages of the professional career of an engineer.Comments
