Reduction of negative stereotypes against old age in young volunteers: intergenerational telephone accompaniment program for elderly people in districts of Renca, Paine y Melipilla, Región Metropolitana, Chile

The objective of this work was to evaluate changes in negative stereotypes towards old age in young volunteers who participated in a program based on a phone intervention that gives company to elderly people. The methodology aimed to evaluate whether there were any statistically significant variations in the CENVE (Questionnaire for the Evaluation of Negative Stereotypes towards Old Age) measurements taken from the group of volunteers before and after their work. The t test was used for related measures and independent groups, as well as ANOVA tests to identify if any group had greater variations than others. The results of the measurement show a statistically significant decrease in the level of prejudice towards old age in most of the volunteers, regardless of their age, educational level, gender or experience with the elderly. The most relevant conclusion of the study is that when an intergenerational approach is generated, it is possible to reduce the level of prejudices, while the stereotypes related to age are due in large part to ignorance and to a view that highlights only the negative aspect of old age. These results demonstrate some of the benefits of intergenerational programs.
