This article reconstructs the formation of the Masonic conspiracy theory as an explanation of the French Revolution between 1790 and 1797. Rather than emerging as a fully articulated system, the conspiratorial narrative took shape through interpretive procedures that transformed ritual practices into signs of a hidden will. The analysis distinguishes two moments: the doctrinal elaboration developed by Catholic priests between 1790 and 1792, and the post-Thermidorian phase of mythologization between 1796 and 1797. In this light, the work of Augustin Barruel appears not as a point of origin, but as a synthesis of materials previously formulated.
