  1. Use of tire rubber in dense asphalt mixture for infrastructure projects

The present work is raised from the utilization perspective of tire waste that is out of use. It is well known the problem of its deposits in different countries and the great demand of these as a waste, the lack of legislation of rubbish dumps, and the proliferation of diseases and insects that are generated in them. Taking advantage of the new technologies in asphalt emulsion production machinery, it's how we saw the need of a study of the incorporation of tire dust into asphalt emulsions.

From the LEMAC, Center of Road Researches, the proposal of using tire dust produced by Molicaucho was boosted. At the same time, the process of making the rubber dispersion in the REPSOL-YPF refinery of Ensenada was established, to make a dense asphalt mix for its use as a bearing layer, not before checking out its efficacy.

This is how the main characteristics of the base asphalt and the rubber were studied, as well as the dispersions of both of them, the arids to make the dense mix, the production in an asphalt-rubber industrial plant, its placing in the building site with an experimental section in the city of La Plata and the subsequent verification of the mix through the extraction of samples.

  2. Characterization and compaction of thermal Power Plant ashes used in road embankments

The shortage of energy resources and raw materials advises to use industrial wastes and subproducts. One area where they can be used is in road construction, getting valid and economical structural solutions, capable of improving the land and the environment.

In this paper, the results and conclusions or a study of ashes characterization from two thermal power plants in Spain, located in the towns of Soto de Ribera and Aboño (Asturias, Spain) are described, for its possible application in the construction of road embankments and fillings.

  3. Hot mix asphalt: a means for the valorization of foundry sand waste

The foundry industries generate large amounts of foundry sands waste that must to be finally disposed carefully. In the city of Tandil, like in other cities around the World, these wastes have been disposed in ditches creating a situation of uncertainty of the potential risk of environmental pollution.

Nowadays, regarding the management of this kind of wastes, one of the proposed issues is the use of these foundry sands as part of the raw materials in the hot mix asphalt production.

In addition to the evaluation of performance tests, this study proposes methodologies to evaluate the possibility of HMA immobilization of certain pollutants present in these sands.

  4. Accidents at level crossings in Cuba during the period from 1991 to 2007

In this study, the relation between the accidents in level crossings and those of regular traffic is established, as well as the main causes of their variation in the period between 1991 and 2007.

An analysis of accidents in this period was carried out, regarding the hours of higher accident risk, the amount of dead and wounded people, the vehicles that cause the highest amounts of collisions, and the provinces and the lines with the highest accident rates. Besides that, some measures to improve the security in level crossings that exist in Cuba are proposed.

  1. Arbitration and Disputes in Road Works – Peruvian MARC

This article was presented by the author in the XIV Ibero-Latin American Asphalt Congress (XIV CILA), that took place in La Habana, Cuba, between November 18th and 25th, 2007; and it provides an opportunity for other Spanish speaker countries to learn from the Peruvian experience in conflict solutions, capable of solving the permanent controversies that usually take place during road construction, as well as in other engineering areas. These controversies definitely impact on the final cost of the works, due to their technical-legal dependence. The results are decisive for both parties in the conflict, those in favor and those against, since its application usually implies significant payments in favor of the winning party. This norm is under the scope of the Law of State Contracts and Acquisitions, valid in Peru since 1998.
