Abstract

Objective. To analyze the influence of religious beliefs in students’ lives and to document changes from the beginning to the end of their first year. Method. 364 new students were surveyed to know how their beliefs changed during their first year at the university. Both ethical aspects as well as integrity or coherence of their beliefs were examined. Results. This group was found to give greater importance to religion (spirituality) than expected. A tendency towards spirituality without religion was also verified. The data suggests that the group did not improve their ethical clarity; instead, they got confused or became more pragmatic. Lastly, an important degree of fragmentation was apparent: a lack of coherence between religious beliefs and actual behavior or opinions in their daily lives.
