Resumen
Debido a su prominencia en la autobiografía de Goethe (Dichtung und Wahrheit, Poesía y verdad) y en las Gespräche mit Goethe (Conversaciones con Goethe) de Johann Peter Eckermann, los estudios goetheanos han asociado los lexemas dämonisch y das Dämomische con la vida de Goethe, y especialmente con su aparente inspiración divina en la producción artística. Aun cuando estos lexemas se consideran en relación con el antiguo término griego del cual son derivados —δαíμων (alemán: Dämon; inglés: daimon o daemon)—, aparecen como parte de una larga tradición de pensamiento europeo que se ocupa de fuentes de inspiración no racionales, así como a los límites de la razón misma. Lejos de ofrecer una teoría o concepto consistente de lo demoniaco, Goethe utiliza estos términos y sus cognados en varias maneras: para referirse a una fuerza misteriosa y terrible que influye la vida de una persona y parece operar en el nexo entre carácter y destino; como un topos poético que describe la relación entre el esfuerzo del sujeto y su mundo externo; como el núcleo morfológico de la personalidad asociado con la tradición astrológica, un núcleo que es visto como el lugar de la propia productividad; y como un nombre o denominación para fenómenos que escapan a nuestra comprensión racional. Precisamente, debido a la flexibilidad y ambigüedad de estos términos, el uso que Goethe hace de ellos ha disfrutado de una fructífera recepción en campos tan variados como la teología, los estudios religiosos y la filosofía desde el siglo XIX hasta el presente.
