Abstract
Social isolation by COVID-19 was a measure that impacted mood and cognitive functioning of the elderly. Objective: To analyze the effects of cognitive stimulation and social isolation during the pandemic on cognitive functioning and mood in elderly people from the Metropolitan Area of Guadalajara, Mexico. Methods: Participants were n=68 elderly users of Clínica de la Memoria-CUT evaluated with a battery of cognitive functions. Group1 participated in a cognitive stimulation program (n=44, mean age=72), was evaluated pre and post test before social isolation. Group2 (n=24, mean age=71) was assessed before and after social isolation. Intra-group comparisons were analyzed with t-Student and Chi-square tests. Results: Group 1 obtained a significant pre-post test improvement (p<.05) associated to the stimulation program in attention and executive functions. Group 2 found decline in all cognitive functions at post-test, specifically in processing speed and executive functions (p=.018). Conclusion: Social isolation by COVID-19 is associated with decline in cognitive functioning in the elderly compared to improvement in those participating in the cognitive stimulation intervention prior to the pandemic.
