Abstract
In any discussion of the founding of the Association it is important to remember, and indeed never to forget, the rationale behind the decision to hold that first meeting. All of the institutions were small, all were isolated; what was perceived was that by having regular meetings, knowing what was happening at the other laboratories, and seeking ways of collaborating on common problems the disadvantages of isolation and small size might be partially overcome. Contact and collaboration between laboratories was perceived as being more important than the formal presentation of scientific papers: This perception seems to have changed with the passage of time.Comments
