Dr. de Girolami died in 2006.
Periodically, the Tropical Biology Journal appoints an ad hoc committee to review all articles on biomedical issues published in a particular period (usually one year). The winning article is selected based on its quality and the members of the Evaluation Committee are appointed by the School of Biology and the Faculties of Microbiology, Medicine and Pharmacy of the University of Costa Rica.
The objective of the award, founded by the Girolami family, is to support biomedical research in Costa Rica. Winners receive a certificate and a cash prize of around $ 2000.
In accordance with the rules of the award, all Costa Rican authors of biomedical articles published in the Journal are considered participants automatically.
The De Girolami Prize was established in 1995 by Dr. Ettore de Girolami and his family. Dr. de Girolami was an Italian cytologist and pathologist who lived in Costa Rica from 1952 to 1958. During this period he taught at the University of Costa Rica and carried out important research on cancer and other biomedical aspects.
