Abstract

This article analyzes the 1859, 1868 and 1870 coups d’etat in Costa Rica and the process through which new governments were installed. It highlights the important role played by municipalities in legitimizing political changes furthered by a minority since they were summoned to approve the acts of the military   which were defined as a manifestation of the nation’s will.
