Abstract
This article compares Simone Weil and Plato by addressing the following question: how do their thought and lives resemble one another with respect to their concern for the transgression of human vulnerability? The study examines the ethical–philosophical primacy that injustice suffered by another human being may hold both in the work and in the lives of these two authors. Weil’s life was shaped by political engagement in solidarity with her novel interpretation of the allegory of the cave, which emphasizes how the malheur produced by capitalism constitutes a cardinal motive both for liberation and for the return to the cave—a point that Plato does not seem to have articulated with the same clarity in his development of the allegory. Nevertheless, other passages in Plato’s work and moments in the life of the Athenian do appear to place at the highest level of importance indignation (aganaktēsis, ἀγανάκτησις) in the face of the transgression of human vulnerability. This article argues that not only are the philosophical proposals of both thinkers essentially shaped by concern for injustice suffered by others, but that their lives likewise shared this same gravitational center.
