Abstract

Introduction: In Costa Rica, current labor regulations allow 8-hour daytime shifts, 6-hour nighttime shifts, and 7-hour mixed shifts. However, the growing demand for goods and services has prompted a legislative proposal to extend workdays to 12 hours over four days per week. This narrative review aims to analyze the potential effects of this proposal from a human movement perspective. Proposition: Extended work hours could worsen sedentary behavior and limit opportunities for regular physical activity, resulting in negative consequences for public health and occupational well-being. Arguments for discussion: Evidence indicates that longer workdays may increase sedentary time and, consequently, the risk of chronic diseases and mortality, especially when night shifts are included. In such circumstances, irregular activity patterns—such as concentrated exercise on weekends—may provide partial health benefits. However, these effects are modest compared with regular physical activity and may be associated with a higher risk of injury. Conclusions: Considering the potential implementation of extended work schedules, it is essential to promote comprehensive strategies that improve infrastructure, encourage healthy lifestyles, and reduce sedentary behavior. Such actions could enhance public health, quality of life, productivity, and job satisfaction. Further national research is needed to understand the specific characteristics of the Costa Rican workforce and to design contextually relevant interventions that mitigate the negative impacts of prolonged working hours.
