About the Journal

Focus and Reach

The journal is an online bimonthly publication of the School of Medicine, of the University of Costa Rica, whose main objetive is to provide a site for the publication of original medical research, that hasn’t been published previously in any other means of dissemination of information, and with an inminently clinical content. Given the orientation of the magazine, the manuscripts to publish must be:

  1. Cases presentations, with their respective rationalized clinical analysis.
  2. Bibliographical revisions, which mostly are motivated by a case’s analysis or cases of particular academic interest.
  3. Medical images: where it is possible, the fascicle will include some image of clinical interest, either a from radiology, nuclear studies, EKG or from pathology.
  4. Editorial: covers a great range of subjects, going from topics in health of national interest, to the discussion of some of the cases in the fascicle from the perspective of the director or one of our collaborators.

Our main goal in public are physicians, general or specialist; but given our academic vision, we also aim to reach students of health sciences carrers’, both grade and postgraduate, who can will help the growing fo the journal by publishing original manuscripts.

Finally, the journal doesn’t receives external sponsorship and it’s not related to any commercial entity.

 

Ethical Guidelines

The journal follows the guidelines stablished by Helsinki’s Declaration and Nuermeberg’s Code for research in health science, as well by it’s own Code of Ethics that is specified next.

Code of Ethics

The journal follows the guidelines for the research in health sciences stablished in Geneva’s statement, the Nuremberg’s Code, the UNESCO’s recommendation of Science and Cientific Researchers.

Knowing the national state of affairs in which reasearch in health develops, our journal requiresthat the guidelines stablished by the CENDEISSS are followedfor those investigations that include data and/or patients treated in the Social Security environments.

The journal only accepts original works that the Editorial Committee with the International Committe determine are relevant to the current medical practice and adhere to national and international legislation. The time at which each manuscript is received is taken into account in the publication decision, it is not a definitive criteria.

Every person listed as an author in a manuscript must have had an active participation in the research and drafting of it. The journal requires an application for publishing, signed by all authors, the same can be found here, and must be attached with the other documents to the platform when the manuscript is included, to begin with the reviewing process.  If there during this process there are changes made to the munscript, they must be accompanied by a note, signed by all authors, that explains the changes and the acceptance of this changes by all involved. The same must be done if the changes occur based on the recommendations of the reviewers, for that is this document found here.

At least one of the authors of the manuscript must be an active student of a postgraduate program or already be a postgraduated.  Any member of the journal, either from the Editorial Committee, the Cientific Committee or the Advisory Committee, as well as any of their first or second degree family members can submit manuscripts for their publication, as long as the person involved or related to doesn’t involves him o herself in any of the reviewing process or the publication desicion.

The conlict of interests must be informed immediately to the Editorial Committee, the Cientific Committee and the Advisory Committee, regardless of whom it relates to.

The manuscripts can not be submitted for revision to another journal at the same time as their submitted for reviewing by the Clinical Journal HSJD-UCR. Any complaint, even those done anonymously, will be investigated. If it is proved that there are citation errors, mistakes on data, manipulation of information, plagiarism, duplication, false information, not reported conflicts of interest, whether by personal or comercial relationships, the Editorial Committee along with the Cientific Committee and the Advisory Committee will determine the actions to take. This decisions could include an errata, retractions o the rejection of the manuscript.  In regards to the authors, the maximun penalty would be a veto for publishing in the journal, the period of veto will be determine as part of the sanctions by the Editorial Committee along with the Cientific Committee and the Advisory Committee. In the case that it involves members of any of the journals Committee, the maximun penalty will include the discharge form the journal and veto for publishing.

 

Review by plagiarism

One of the initial steps for the reviewing of manuscripts consists in grammatical and orthographic evaluation, as well as revision to detect plagiarism. For this the journal uses the platform TurnItIn, the manuscripts that obtain less than 30% are accepted.
