Abstract
Leprosy is chronic infectious, slowly developing progressive disease that damages the skin and nervous system caused by Mycobacterium leprae and Mycobacterium lepromatosis, which mainly affects the skin and peripheral nervous system.
We describe some epidemiological characteristics of leprosy in Costa Rica during 2012-2017. This study showed a prevalence rate less than one per ten thousand inhabitants nationwide. Nevertheless, new cases continue to be reported throughout the country and in some regions in greater proportion than others, indicating that transmission of the disease persists as a potential risk especially in families.
