Resumen

En el ámbito académico costarricense se ha estudiado a Thomas Francis Meagher como un viajero que visitó Costa Rica en tres ocasiones. La primera de ellas fue en 1858. Meagher publicó en Estados Unidos tres artículos en los que narró las experiencias de ese primer viaje. Si bien es un personaje histórico conocido en el medio costarricense, se ha dado poca importancia a sus estrechas relaciones con William Walker y el filibusterismo y a sus conexiones con la Administración de José María Montealegre. En este artículo se aborda el examen de la primera de esas dimensiones poco estudiadas de Meagher.
