El aporte de la obra literaria de Gustavus vassa [Olaudah Equiano] a la campaña abolicionista inglesa (1787 – 1807)

Resumen

Gustavus Vassa fue un africano esclavizado que después de haber comprado su libertad vivió en Inglaterra a finales del siglo XVIII, y publicó su autobiografía en 1789, cuyo objetivo era crear una conciencia en los lectores sobre los pesares que acarreaba la condición de esclavitud y la necesidad de erradicar dicha situación. Varios académicos que han investigado la vida y obra de Vassa han concluido que su autobiografía fue utilizada como instrumento político dentro de la campaña abolicionista liderada por el Committee for the Abolition of the Slave Trade. Este artículo parte de esta caracterización para determinar cómo Gustavus Vassa –en su condición de africano, testigo de la esclavitud y con poco tiempo de residencia en Inglaterra– logró hacer llegar su obra al Parlamento británico y hacerla funcionar como vehículo literario del mensaje abolicionista. Para intentar responder a dicha interrogante se investigaron las estrategias y condiciones que permitieron la difusión de la obra dentro del periodo delimitado para esta investigación: 1780, década en que Vassa comenzó a participar en la campaña abolicionista mediante la publicación de cartas en los periódicos, hasta 1807, cuando se aprobó el proyecto de ley para la abolición del comercio de esclavos.
