Abstract

Usucaption—the acquisition of ownership through long-standing possession— was widely discussed in Roman civil law. At the turn of the seventeenth century, the question began to be debated whether the concept also could be applied to international relations. The present essay is concerned with Leibniz’s contri- bution to this debate.
