Abstract
This paper proposes a reflection on the university formation of the 21st century in the context of capitalist globalization. To do this, it analyses how the university has been subjected to efficiency criteria in marked contrast to the idea of emancipatory education. Finally, it emphasizes the urgent situation of contemporary societies facing increasing deterioration in the world of life and the role that higher education would have in contributing to the knowledge and eventual overcoming of extreme marginalization and poverty.
