Abstract

Objective: Analyze the adherence to the national arbovirosis guides of Costa Rica. Methods: Case study using a mixed methodology of sequential explanatory type, using questionnaires, checklists and focus groups. Results: The average knowledge of health workers on the diagnosis of arbovirosis ranged between 39% and 43%; the knowledge of the treat ment was between 41% and 46%. The proportions of adhesion to specific guidelines were the following: Dengue between 68 -73% in general and between 89% and 93% for isolation units, Chikungunya between 19% and 29%, Zika between 88% and 96% and Zika in pregnan women between 71% and 81%. The nursing staff fulfilled 100% the required sections in the cases studied. The focus groups identified barriers and facilitators of the implementation process from the perspective of each level of attention, highlighting the communication between actors, content and socialization of the guides, and availability of resources for care. Conclusions: In the studied region, arboviruses share attributes of neglected diseases. There are limitations for workers to adhere to institutio nal guidelines at the level of resources, updating documents and their socialization. Adherence to guidelines varied depending on the complexity of the indicated interventions, observing better results if the interventions are simple or if they are exclusively dedicated to the cases.
