Abstract

Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) is a bone complication associated with tissue irradiation secondary to the treatment of a neoplasm. Patients with a history of head and neck irradiation have an increased risk of developing this disease when undergoing dental procedures. There are prevention and treatment protocols for ORN with hyperbaric oxygen, which are safe and have few side effects. This retrospective observational study of medical records in a reference hospital of the Social Security of Costa Rica identified 50 participants, with an average frequency of 8 protocols applied per year. The patients had a mean age of 53.6 years and were predominantly male, with salivary gland cancer being the most prevalent. Dental sepsis was the most common diagnosis and its treatment was extraction. The occurrence of ORN was extremely low, as were surgical and OHB-associated secondary events. The analyzed population shows behavior similar to that reported in other latitudes and the protocol appears to be well tolerated and could reduce the incidence of ORN
