Abstract
Physiotherapeutic intervention in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) arises as a response to the multisystem complications associated with prolonged bed rest experienced by patients in said unit. Current scientific evidence points to encouraging benefits in these circumstances, both for users and for the medical center, which is why the work of the physiotherapist has been consolidated in many countries. In Costa Rica, the Physiotherapy service is provided in intensive care, however, there is no documented evidence of the experience in the country. For this reason, the objective of this research was to characterize the physical therapy care process in the ICU setting of Costa Rica. Therefore, a quantitative, observational and descriptive study was carried out through opinion surveys of physiotherapists who work in the care of people in critical condition in the ICUs of Costa Rican hospitals. This research reveals disparity in the experience of Costa Rica with respect to that of the international context, since the physiotherapist does not attend to the complications of the respiratory system of the critically ill patient. In daily practice, the phases recommended by the World Confederation of Physical Therapy for the physiotherapy process are met, where early mobilization is at the forefront as a treatment option.
