Abstract
We describe the clinical profiles of 27 adult patients with severe confirmed influenza A H1N1 admitted to the medical intensive care unit at Calderón Guardia Hospital, in Costa Rica over a 10-month period. Mean age for all patients was 41 years old, 15 patients were men, 20 required mechanical ventilation, and 7 died. All of those who died had renal failure. One half of the patients had underlying chronic medical conditions.
