Resumen
Chaetodon sedentarius y C. aculeatus se separan de sus congéneres caribeños por sus caracteres merísticos, longitud del rostro y coloración. En la región de Santa Marta (Colombia) ambas especies aparecen en aguas más someras que en el resto del Caribe, pues C. sedentarius es común desde 1 m de profundidad y C. aculeatus aparece a partir de los 10 m. Se ha planteado recientemente que Prognathodes, cuya especie tipo es C. aculeatus, debe ser considerado un género aparte, pero esa decisión está basada en argumentos discutibles y contribuye a aumentar innecesariamente la inestabilidad de la nomenclatura.
