Resumen
Un estudio biológico de un quitón tropical (Chiton stockesii) incluyendo algunos aspectos de distribución, densidad, reproducción y biometría se llevó a cabo en Punta Pochote, Bahía Ballena, Costa Rica, desde agosto de 1981 hasta julio de 1982.
Chiton stockesii presentó distribución de tipo agrupada con una densidad relativa de 0,2 ind/m2 en la zona litoral superior; de 5,1 ind/m2 y 6,3 ind/m2 en las zonas media e inferior respectivamente.
Los coeficientes de correlación calculados resultaron ser significativos a P ≤ 0,01, no se pudo establecer dimorfismo sexual (P ≤ 0,01) con respecto a la longitud, ancho y peso total, correspondiendo a las dos primeras variables los valores más bajos del coeficiente de variación (13,88 y 12,49% respectivamente).
La relación entre machos y hembras fue de 1,54: 1, en ningún caso se encontró evidencia de hermafroditismo; el índice y el estado gonádico mostraron variaciones estacionales similares a (P ≤ 0,05). Se establecieron como épocas más notorias de gametogénesis y acumulación de gametos maduros las comprendidas entre agosto-setiembre-noviembre de 1981 y abril-mayo de 1982 y se fijaron como épocas de desove las incluidas entre setiembre-octubre de 1981; de noviembre de 1981 a febrero de 1982 y entre junio-julio de 1982. Estas épocas estuvieron marcadas por una disminución en el peso y longitud de la gónada.
