Resumen
Un estudio durante las erupciones del Volcán Irazú (Costa Rica) de 1963-1965 mostró que sus cenizas afectaron las condiciones ecológicas de muchos insectos. Los resultados de los experimentos sugieren que las cenizas actuaron mecánicamente sobre varias poblaciones, probablemente por rasgadura de la epicutícula por las partículas abrasivas, haciéndola permeable y acelerando así la deshidratación. A insectos como la abeja doméstica (Apis mellifera), en apariencia la ceniza volcánica no los afectaba externamente, sino que su efecto letal se debió a la ingestión de néctar contaminado con ceniza y a la destrucción masiva de la vegetación de la cual dependían.
Se pudo observar que la ceniza volcánica afectó seriamente a diversas poblaciones de abejas y avispas en la vecindad de San José, en los años 1964 y 1965-66. En cambio la ceniza volcánica aparentemente benefició a otros insectos, por estar cubiertos de una capa protectora de cera y por la posible eliminación de sus enemigos naturales, a tal extremo que los convirtió en plagas de importancia económica.
