Resumen
El asentamiento de puerulos de la langosta espinosa del Caribe, Panulirus argus fue monitoreado usando colectores modificados tipo Witham, entre diciembre de 1996 y marzo de 1998 en siete sitios alrededor de St. Thomas, Islas Vírgenes. En general, para todos los sitios estudiados se colectaron un total de 605 puerulos en 553 muestras, que representan un esfuerzo por unidad de captura (EPUC) de 1.09 puerulos. El mayor asentamiento registrado ocurrió en sitios declarados recientemente Reservas Marinas, para los cuales se alcanzó un EPUC de 1.77 puerulos. El asentamiento en sitios no protegidos fue más bajo (EPUC = 0.31 puerulos). El reclutamiento de puerulos descendió 53% en lugares hacia mar afuera entre febrero de 1997 y marzo de 1998. Solamente en el 10% de los meses muestreados (entre 1997 y 1998) se alcanzó un EPUC > 0.5, comparado al alcanzado en un 55% de los meses de monitoreo en un estudio previo entre 1992 y 1993. A pesar del decline del EPUC entre estos dos periodos comparados, la captura comercial de langostas durante la temporada de pesca 2000-2001, y por inferencia la población adulta de este crustáceo (la talla mínima legal de captura de langosta en las Islas Vírgenes es de ≥3.5 cm longitud del caparazón), permanece estable.Citas
