Journal History

The first issue of Revista Estudios was prepared by professors from the Chair of Historia de la Cultura at University of Costa Rica in July 1978. Its first director was Professor Rose Marie Karpinsky.

Its initial purpose was "to become an instrument of university dialogue in national and international contexts", to bring historical and academic research into Estudios Generales classrooms and to get rid of "the deafness of the times", that is, the lack of communication of intellectual thought due to the absence of channels for it.

The journal began with four sections: national history, Latin American history, world history, and bibliographic reviews. From its earliest issues, the journal highlighted the role of professors from Estudios Generales who carried out the 1957 reform. Additionally, the journal embodied an interest in discussing issues related to Central American and Costa Rican realities, as well as current world issues.

Thus, early on, the journal demonstrated an interest in humanism and the humanities. It consistently provides consideration on the importance of the humanities in the integral training of students and professionals, the professional responsibility regarding scientific knowledge and, in more recent issues, it addresses topics such as human rights, advocacy of public universities and open knowledge.

For more than 25 years, the journal was edited and distributed in print form. Starting in 2007, the process of transitioning to digital format began, first through its inclusion to the regional online information system, Latindex, and then through University of Costa Rica’s academic journal portal in 2012. This meant that the journal was edited and published in the Open Journal System from that point on.

Although the Revista Estudios was born as a history journal, over the course of more than three decades it has become a means of promoting humanist thought
