Abstract
This article examines the curricular elements and the experience at the State Open University (UNED) in Costa Rica since 1997 in the program for I and II Cycle English teachers. Based on the author’s experience as a tutor at UNED, the article provides a comprehensive review of the teaching of English as well as analysis of the teaching approaches that have been adapted and applied through time. Besides, the curricular foundations that a program designed for English school teachers should have is proposed. Finally, this study offers some general considerations regarding both the teaching of English as a foreign language and distance learning as tools to face the economic, political, cultural and social challenges of globalization.Comments
