Abstract

The objective of the present study is to know the definition of nursing according to the companions of the patients in a Costa Rican Hospital of the third level of attention. This is a descriptive cross study with cuali-quantitative approach, carried out in October of 2007, with a sample of 118 companions. The results show that most of the population identifies the personal of nursing by their uniform; a smaller percentage recognizes it for its functions. In addition, it is evident that the population interviewed does not know which the difference between the nurse and the assistant is. It is emphasized like field of main action of the nurses the Hospitals. Besides, the population of study recognizes in the personnel of nursing characteristics such as amiability, kindness, respect and love and service for the patient. It is evident that, generally, the professional of nursing does not bring himself to light with the users as with the companions. Most of the population indicates not to receive information neither education from the professional of nursing, and those who receive some type of education from the professionals of nursing, catalogue it mostly dependable. Finally, the population recognizes the doctors as the most important professional of health, followed by the professional of nursing.
