This is a descriptive and quantitative study carried out at a Public Higher Education Institution in Northeastern Brazil, from April to July 2018. Participants were 80 nursing students. A theoretical and practical test was applied to analyze the participants' knowledge and skills. Mann Whitney test and Pearson's chi-square test were used. Students with participation in academic leagues showed better averages of knowledge to identify the victim in cardiopulmonary arrest, correctly check the presence of a pulse, the victim's disposition and offer first care, in addition to the administration of drugs in the event of a cardiopulmonary arrest, and in the skills of assess the victim, start compressions and perform them without interruption, with movement of the trunk to apply force.
