Abstract
A topographic classification of abnormal hemoglobins is presented, together with examples of mechanisms that explain the abnormal physical and chemical behavior of mutant hemoglobins. Clinical manifestations of illnesses caused by abnormal hemoglobin variations are discussed briefly and emphasis is placed on the fact that the function and survival of the hemoglobin molecule in solution depends on the adherence to a strict tridimensional architectureReferences
