Abstract

The need to account for the volitional component in academic Engagement has resulted in the proposal of a fourth dimension called agentic engagement. However, its use in the Spanish-speaking context has been scarce, unclear and inconsistent. The purpose of this study is to analyze the uses of the agentic engagement concept in the research available in the Latín American educational context. An analytical essay was carried out based on a review of recent articles on the topic of Agentic engagement applied in Spanish-speaking contexts. The discussion carried out suggests that the current literature coincides with the original theoretical delimitation of the construct but presents a mainly functional approach that excludes relevant elements in its application related to the enjoyment and personal interest of the student, the relationship with their peers in learning and the agency behaviors outside the classroom or not observable. It is concluded that Spanish-speaking research needs to delve into the intrinsic variables and personal interests of the student when working on agentic engagement, as well as incorporating behaviors outside the classroom and peer work as a relevant and essential manifestation of the construct, given their relationship significant with the development of intrinsic motivational states in the student.
