The present article has the objective of offering alternative methodological proposals for the study of social cognitions, presenting the so called discussion groups as a valid strategy for its study. For the following, a review of the concept of social cognition was done, questioning the traditional approaches for directing research to the approaches that strive for the study of socially distributed and situated cognitions. Afterwards, a general description of the discussion groups is done, operative specifications are identified and, some appraisals about the analytic strategies to employ are elaborated.
