This paper highlights the importance of education in a global context of crisis, noting that public universities, such as the University of Costa Rica, must strengthen their role in social development. However, they face challenges of regression and exclusion, leading to a crisis in the Humanities, which are seen as of little use from a neoliberal perspective that prioritizes the economic considerations. Despite this context, we defend the essential role of the Humanities in fostering critical individuals committed to democratic, ethical, and environmental values. In response, the University of Costa Rica, through the Department of Literature at the Sede de Occidente, Recinto de Grecia, has implemented an interdisciplinary approach that integrates literature and environmental management. Through the analysis of two literary works “Y vendimos la lluvia”, by Costa Rican writer Carmen Naranjo Coto (1989), and “El rey burgués”, by Nicaraguan writer Rubén Darío (2010), and participatory activities, critical thinking about social and environmental issues is promoted. The study proposes renewing traditional educational methodologies with active and participatory pedagogical mediation, favoring meaningful learning and offering a new perspective to seek sustainable development.
