 History

This publication has been present at the University of Costa Rica for more than 50 years. In March 1956, the Journal of Legal-Social Sciences appears and is directed by Dr. Santos Quirós Navino and Mr. Alfonso Carro. In September of 1959, the number four, appears with the name "Journal of Social Sciences" and is directed by Dr. Gustavo Santoro and Mr. Alfonso Carro. Between 1972-1977, the numbers of 6-13 are published, being directed by Dr. Samuel Stone.

From 1979 to the present, Dr. Daniel Camacho assumes the direction of the Journal and decides to update the publication of the back issues, starting with number 14. In the new period, the elaboration of thematic numbers is introduced, as well as , the inclusion of other sections: controversy, social theory, articles and collaborators.

Since 1986, it has been published four times a year and has appeared continuously until now. The Journal has a Director, a Publisher, an Editorial Board, an International Consultative Committee and the support of assistants, who are responsible for working to maintain the solidity and scientific quality for the user. Currently, there is a digital database in which all the issues of the journal are accessible. In addition, it has two versions: printed and digital.

 

Definition, focus and scope

The Journal of Social Sciences of the University of Costa Rica is a quarterly publication. It disseminates the results of scientific works of the disciplines found in the Schools of the Faculty of Social Sciences: Anthropology, Communication Sciences, Political Sciences, Geography, History, Sociology, Psychology and Social Work, as well as, in the institutes of research: the Institute of Psychological Research (IIP) and the Institute of Social Research (IIS).


The Journal also publishes research results from other social sciences, in addition to those mentioned and interdisciplinary works. It disseminates works of external researchers to the University of Costa Rica, national and international, that comply with the guidelines of the journal and are effective contributions to social science.


This is a thematic magazine and as such, develops one or several topics in each issue. It is aimed at professionals, researchers, professors and students of the various areas of the Social Sciences and is accessible to a general public with medium education. It has a multidisciplinary Editorial Board and an International Advisory Committee. In addition, with the collaboration of
an important group, also multidisciplinary, of specialists who dictate the proposals of articles.

The journal is located and receives support from the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Costa Rica and is part of the Editorial System of Scientific Dissemination of Research (siedin) under the coordination and financial and administrative support of the Vice-Rectory for Research.

 

Types of academic documents received for publication

 

Academic article

An academic article is the result of a research developed in a specific discipline. It has a defined topic and objectives based on theoretical and methodological guidelines. These documents are written in an academic tone and make use of specialized vocabulary to provide pertinent information. They must have a scientific contribution to make.

 The format that such writings must comply with is:

  1. Title
  2. Author's name, institutional affiliation, orcid and email
  3. Abstract and keywords (in Spanish and English)
  4. Introduction
  5. Theoretical and conceptual framework
  6. Methodology
  7. Results and discussion
  8. Conclusions
  9. References (in APA Format)

 Once submitted, the article is reviewed by academic peers. If it passes this review, it goes on to the editorial and philological review, which determines the inclusion of the text in an issue of the Journal of Social Sciences.

  

Academic essay

In this type of paper, the author develops their ideas on a specific topic. It is characterized by a personal character and style, different from the academic article. That said, the academic essay develops a thesis based on scientific sources, for which it must follow the citation and referencing system of APA Standards in its most recent edition.

 The format that such writings must comply with is:

  1.  Title
  2. Author's name, institutional affiliation, orcid and email
  3. Abstract and keywords (in English and Spanish)
  4. Introduction
  5. Development
  6. Discussion
  7. Conclusions
  8. References (in APA Format)

 

Once submitted, the essay is reviewed by academic peers. If it is approved, it passes to the editorial and philological review, which determines the inclusion of the text in an issue of the Journal of Social Sciences.

 

Bibliographic review

This type of text exposes the content of a work, making reference to its essential ideas, its purpose, and other aspects that make the author's position known. Reviews can be descriptive or critical; in the first case, no judgments or conclusions are made about the content of the material presented. On the contrary, the second type establishes some evaluation on the subject, based on academic knowledge.

 

The format that reviews must comply with is:

  1.  Bibliographic record of the work reviewed (according to APA).
  2. Author's name, institutional affiliation, orcid identifier and email
  3. Abstract y keywords (in English and Spanish)
  4. Introduction
  5. Development
  6. Evaluative or critical judgment/Discussion
  7. Conclusions
  8. References (in APA Format)

 

As opposed to the previous entries, the literature review is not peer-reviewed by academics. However, it must still pass editorial and philological review in order to be included in an issue of the Journal of Social Sciences.

 

Peer evaluation procedure


a) All papers received will be submitted to the judgment of specialists external to the academic institution to which the author or author belongs.  The double blind method will be used, in which the evaluator will not know the author's name and also, the name of the specialist will be anonymous. The content of the opinion is confidential for internal use of the Journal and the author. It is also a publication that does not charge for submission, review, processing or publication of articles.

b) The article will be sent to the specialist, with a formal letter requesting an evaluation and a form in order to review 11 aspects of the article:

1. The article has a high academic content, coming from a study or a detailed investigation, with solid theoretical bases and clear results.
2. The affirmations are supported by a consistent and solid argument.
3. The article is based on a clear, exhaustive and pertinent theory.
4. An interesting, relevant and pertinent empirical research is presented. It also presents a rigorous and detailed information analysis.
5. The methodology used is adequate for the subject of study and is consistent with the theoretical framework presented. In addition, a detailed description of the methodology is presented.
6. Use of language, writing, clarity in the exhibition and organization of ideas
7. A contribution of thesis or new knowledge on the subject is presented (Originality)
8. The citations have their corresponding bibliographic reference
9. The bibliography is updated
10. The conclusions consider the objective of the article and analyze the main ideas discussed.
11. The article is of interest to readers of the
Journal

c) The above aspects will be evaluated by means of a scale of 1 to 5 (1. Poor, 2. Very bad, 3. Regular, 4. Very good, 5. Excellent). In each aspect, there is a box for comments, observations and justification of each rating.

d) Likewise, observations in the text are allowed by means of comments boxes or highlighted with color, to indicate more specific observations.

e) The form and the article will be reviewed and modified before being sent to the author. Likewise, a letter will be sent indicating the status of the article, if it is approved, rejected or the suggestion of recommendations for improving the text.

f) In the event that the author does not approve any clause of the evaluation, it will be addressed in writing to the Director or Editor of the Journal with a reasoned explanation of the disagreement to consider it.

g) Once the article returns with the corrections included by the author, it will be reviewed again, to verify that the observations were correctly attended.

h) The last decision for the publication or rejection of an article corresponds to the Director and the Editorial Board of the Journal, which will take into account the opinion of the reviewers, without it being mandatory.

i) The duration time between admission and delivery of the evaluation is 3-4 months, according to the availability of the evaluators. 1-3 months will be given to include corrections of the evaluation if necessary. Subsequently, an editorial and philological review will be carried out in 1 month. The approximate total publication time is 9 months.

 

Frequency of publication

The Journal of Social Sciences is published quarterly in the months of January-March, April-June, July-September and October-December. Generally, it will be published at the beginning of each month of January, April, July and October.

The journal will publish 40-48 articles per year. For the sending of articles, they will be received throughout the year through the email and the OJS system. Also, all points of the publication norm must be complied with and the authorization letter attached.

 

Open Access Policy

This journal provides free and immediate access to its content under the principle of making research freely available to the public, which encourages a greater exchange of global knowledge. "Open access" is understood as free access to all our documents on the available internet platforms. Also, texts can be downloaded, printed, distributed and used, provided that the terms of the licenses used are respected.

From nro. 130 (IV-2010) until nro. 163 (I-2019) of our publication, the articles are licensed under Creative Commons Atributtion-Non Commercial-NoDerivs 3.0 Costa Rica (CC BY-NC-ND 3.0) (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc -nd / 3.0 / cr /).

From nro. 164 (II-2019), it was upsdated to Creative Commons Atributtion-Non Commercial 4.0 Internacional (CC BY-NC 4.0): for non-commercial purposes, the corresponding credits are made and the authors are cited correctly.

The Social Sciences Magazine executes the self-archiving policy, through the institutional repository of the University of Costa Rica, called Kérwá, in which the digital information of the published numbers is stored and preserved. For more information visit http://www.kerwa.ucr.ac.cr/. In this case, the final versions reviewed, evaluated, edited and published by the Magazine are uploaded.

 

Digital Preservation Policy

 

The Journal of Social Sciences uses the internal systems of the University for the preservation of documents, in this case they are protected in the servers of the Faculty of Social Sciences, which are updated and backed up every week. Also, the PKP PN is used, which provides text preservation services for any magazine in OJS.

 

Code of Ethics

This code recognizes the responsibilities of the parties involved in the process of entry, editing, evaluation and publication of any article and academic document that is sent to the Social Sciences Journal, in order to comply with the ethical, academic and integrity commitment that must present all process of scientific and academic publication. The Journal of Social Sciences is committed to ensuring the scientific rigor of our articles and greater transparency throughout the process.

Responsibilities of the author


1. The author will commit by means of an authorization, to submit an original and unpublished article, that is, that has not been published in another means of dissemination, printed or digital, nor is it being evaluated by another committee editorial or scientific
journal.

2. No reference should be omitted from the sources used and the citation will be made corresponding to the APA model used in the Journal.

3. The quotations should be indicated in quotation marks and with their respective reference. Likewise, paraphrased quotations must include a citation. In the same way, citations from documents of the same author without reference, are considered self-plagiarism, for which the bibliographic reference should be indicated appropriately in each case.

4. The data and information presented must be true respecting the intellectual property rights of the entities and participants of the investigation.

5. The author must present the respective authorizations for the use of images and photographs used in the document. Otherwise, they will be removed from the text.

6. The author must deliver the document following the Norms for the presentation of articles used by the Journal.

7. The Journal reserves the right to discard any submitted work if it is considered that the topic does not correspond to the areas of interest.

8. Articles published in the Journal will use the Creative Commons 4.0 license. Attribution - Non-commercial.

9. Following the regulations of the university, academic publications will use the open access policy.

10. When submitting an article to the Journal, the author agrees to accept the processes of control, evaluation and publication / rejection of the document.

11. In case of disagreement with the opinion or some point of the evaluation, the author must adequately justify his argument of not following the recommendation of the evaluation.

 

Publisher responsibilities, Editorial Committee and International Advisory Board

1. Review the relevance of the themes of the documents for possible publication in the Journal.

2. Publish four thematic issues per year.

3. Perform the respective control in the entry of the articles: authorizations, format, translations and references.

4. The Turnitin system will be used for all documents received, in order to detect cases of plagiarism or self-plagiarism. If a high percentage of plagiarism is detected (greater than 50%), it will be rejected immediately.

5. Determine the approval or rejection of the articles according to the evaluations carried out by the reviewers and specialists.

6. Send to evaluate the articles to reviewers respecting the anonymity of the author (double blind), to preserve the transparency and objectivity in the evaluations.

7. Clarify doubts to the authors and reviewers regarding the editorial process.

8. If an article is approved for publication, a form of editorial and philological observations will be sent to the authors, for the respective review of general data, observations, suggestions and changes that were made in the final document.

9. Present the complete material to the Editorial for its layout and final reproduction.

10. Ensure the good reputation, academic rigor and prestige of the Journal.

 

Responsibilities of the evaluator

1. Review and evaluate only the jobs that correspond to your specialty and experience. Otherwise, you can recommend other reviewers in that area of ​​investigation.

2. Respect the double blind policy of the Journal. In case of knowing the author of a document (conflict of interest), the editor should be informed and sent to another evaluator.

3. Review the articles following the evaluation points delivered by the Journal (Article evaluation form). Likewise, observations can be included with citations and control of changes within the article.

4. Deliver the evaluation within the period of time agreed with the Journal.

5. The evaluation must be done using an academic and respectful language. Likewise, the evaluation must be carried out objectively and rigorously, focusing on the improvement of the document. In case of having serious problems of content and methodology, it is requested to adequately justify his argument to not accept the document.

 

Policy for Plagiarism Control

The articles admitted to the Journal of Social Sciences will be submitted to the plagiarism control system used by the University of Costa Rica, called Turnitin, which will provide a final report with the websites and documents where the paragraphs not correctly cited were taken. Likewise, we will proceed to check that all the citations are correctly placed and the literal paragraphs have their corresponding quotation marks, indentation and citation.

In the documents without problems of plagiarism, we will proceed to the search and assignment of evaluators to make the corresponding opinions. Otherwise, if the document has less than 50% match, it will proceed to send back to the authors, the article with the paragraphs with plagiarism problems highlighted in color and a report with the following 3 aspects:


-Name and authors of the documents that were used without making the citation.

-Direction of the web page in which the reference was found.

-Suggestions and recommendations to correct the document.


In those documents where the match is greater than 50%, it will proceed to reject it immediately, since it would not be respecting the code of ethics nor the rules of presentation of articles, which indicate the responsibility of the author to submit an article unpublished and original, respecting the rules of academic citation used by the Journal of Social Sciences.

Likewise, self-plagiarism will not be allowed within the documents received by the journal. In case of being identified by the system, the author will be notified to correct the text, otherwise, the article will be rejected (Additional information: Etica editorial y el problema del autoplagio | SciELO en Perspectiva).

In the event that the document comes from a thesis or graduation work, this must be indicated in a note in the title of the article and be presented in the article format requested by the journal. In this case, the results and the stories used in the thesis can be used within the text with their respective source, but their analysis, theoretical framework and conclusions must belong to the objective of the article and not of the thesis.
