Abstract
This is a research progress report written before the elections of 2002. It provides an
analysis of Costa Rican political attitudes, specially those of the youth, which are used
as context to understand recent electoral behavior. The central thesis is that specific
support to the political system -specially towards parties and politicians- is more eroded that diffuse support, with the notable exception of the institutions of horizontal
accountability. It is also shown that system support is developed during the years of
secondary education.
