Abstract
Amparo López-Calleja was born in Nuevitas, Province of Camagüey, Cuba. August 7, 1870. Francisco, her father, and Manuel her uncle, fought in The Ten Year War against Spain (1868-1878). Due to political reasons, she left Cuba when she was three years old with her two brothers.because her life was in serious danger. It was the beginning of the war of independence in Cuba. She grew up and was educated in Costa Rica where she performed a wide variety of social, political and scientific activities. She created public and private institutions to protect children, ill and elder people. Nationally and internationally recognized for her contributions to natural history and orchidology. Disappointed from local politics in Costa Rica, she moved and died in Tegucigalpa, Honduras on April 20, 1951. This extraordinary woman is considered the first Costa Rican naturalist for her biological and social legacy.
