Volume 68 – Supplement 2 – September 2020: Freshwater Ecosystems in Latin America

Latin America is characterized by hosting a great diversity of ecosystems, where freshwater environments stand out due to their ubiquity in the landscape. These ecosystems present a variety of conditions that create an environment conducive to the establishment of aquatic organisms. In Latin America we find from large rivers in tropical or semi-desert regions to mountain streams or intermittent pampas, and from shallow tropical lakes, high mountain bogs to deep lakes of cold climates, which create unique environments with a typical biota adapted to the environment already its eventual variations (Bonetto & Wais, 2006).
