Abstract
This article compiles and analyzes the lexical anglicisms found in the digital versions of two of Costa Rican’s weekly newspapers El Financiero and Semanario Universidad during May of 2016. With such objective in mind, a corpus of all the digital journalistic articles of the two newspapers was compiled and the lexical anglicisms were extracted. A quantitative study was conducted based on the methodology proposed by Alicia Bolaños Medina and Carmen Luján García. The quantitative study found 175 anglicisms that appeared 704 times in both newspapers. The anglicisms found in the study were analyzed according to their frequency of appearance, the section of the newspaper where they occurred, their orthographic and orthotypographic features, the grammatical categories they belonged to such as lexical category and number, and if they were presented in the newspaper articles with a Spanish translation or explanation. As a conclusion, a qualitative analysis of the results is conducted and some hypotheses of the appearance of anglicisms in El Financiero and Semanario Universidad are explained.
