Resumo
Este artigo é uma reflexão, a partir do caso dos professores garífunas de Belize, sobre as heranças e apropriações das categorias étnico-raciais, construídas na época colonial e rearticuladas no contexto nacional. Considerando-se a identidade como uma construção social, discursiva e situada, analisaremos primeiro, a partir dos estudos de caso, como as categorias étnico-raciais eram construídas e reproduzidas no contexto da educação colonial, e em seguida, como são apropriadas por atores contemporâneos que cristalizam a identidade do grupo garífuna. O texto foi produzido com base na literatura histórica sobre Belize e a história da educação, assim como arquivos coloniais do começo do século 20 -coletados em Londres (Kew)- e entrevistas realizadas em Belize, entre 2017 e 2021. Observa-se que a diferença continua sendo construída através de diferenciações étnico-raciais a fim de valorizar e integrar a identidade garífuna nas representações da nação multicultural belizenha.
