Burnout and the journey to work in Mexican high school teachers

Abstract

This research aims to determine the impact of commuting perception on the development of burnout syndrome among high school teachers at the Universidad Autónoma de Zacatecas in Mexico. To this end, 114 teachers were surveyed using the Maslach Burnout Inventory during November 2023. The methodology included statistical analyses such as Cronbach’s Alpha, data normality test, and Kruskal-Wallis H test were used. The results suggest that perceptions of commuting to work generate burnout in teachers. The study concludes that it is necessary to implement teacher wellbeing programs.

    Mexican. PhD in Administration (Academic Unit of Accounting and Administration) and Master’s degree in Psychoanalytic Intervention. Lecturer at the Autonomous University of Zacatecas (UAZ). He is a Level 1 member of the National System of Researchers of CONAHCyT and of the State System of Researchers of Zacatecas. He is co-author of the article From Diagnostics to Implementation: Lectobot for Personalized Reading Comprehension Support in University Students (2024). His research lines include educational technology, organizational theories, emotional health, and social networks.

  • Zenona Jezabel Hernández-Leyva, Universidad Autónoma de Zacatecas, Zacatecas, México.

    Mexican. PhD in Foundations and Developments of Psychoanalysis (Philosophy). Lecturer at the Autonomous University of Zacatecas and at the Academic Unit of Psychology. She is the author of several books and a member of the National System of Researchers. She is co-author of The Father and Sexuality in Freudian Psychoanalytic Clinical Practice (2022). Her research projects focus on violence, psychoanalytic psychotherapy, and the effects of the pandemic.

  • Leocadio Guadalupe Martínez-Alarcón, Universidad Autónoma de Zacatecas, Zacatecas, México.

    Mexican. PhD in Foundations and Developments of Psychoanalysis (Philosophy). He is a lecturer and researcher at the Autonomous University of Zacatecas and a professor at the Academic Unit of Psychology. He is author and co-author of books on mental health, violence, and the pandemic, and co-author of The Father and Sexuality in Freudian Psychoanalytic Clinical Practice (2022). He is a member of the National System of Researchers and founder of graduate programs in psychoanalytic psychotherapy. He leads research projects on violence and the psychosocial effects of the pandemic.

  • Anaís Sánchez-Domínguez, Universidad Autónoma de Zacatecas, Zacatecas, México.

    Mexican. PhD in Humanistic Psychotherapies. Master’s degree in Gestalt Psychotherapy. Master’s degree in Cognitive-Humanistic Therapeutic Approaches. She holds a specialization in Alternative Justice. She works as a psychotherapist in private practice, as a lecturer at various institutions, and as an expert witness for the Judiciary of Zacatecas. She is currently a lecturer at the Autonomous University of Zacatecas. She has conducted workshops on sexual education and carried out psychological expert assessments.
