La mujer en la tragedia ateniense y en la tragedia cristiana hacía tiempo que esperaba un editor. Sus capítulos surgen de muchas lecturas compartidas con alumnos. La autora enfoca las heroínas de diversas obras, descubriendo la admiración que suscitaban en los poetas atenienses, a pesar del estatus inferior en la sociedad. Se detiene en describir los múltiples roles que desempeñaron y también cómo resultan guras anunciadoras y precursoras de su estatus cristiano. Coronando todo, presenta la tragedia de San Gregorio Nacianceno sobre la Virgen María en la Pasión de Cristo.
